Frequently Asked Questions

Everything parents ask us before signing up — and if you don’t see your question here, message us any time.

Is this actually good tutoring?

Who’s actually teaching my child?

Every Algebruh tutor is a currently practising Victorian teacher holding a Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) card, with real experience teaching mathematics in the classroom.

Is this just pre-recorded content, or do I get an actual tutor?

Both. You get a personal 15-minute video from your tutor every week, alongside our exclusive teaching content. Your videos, feedback and conversations are with your real tutor, and only you have access to them.

How is this different from YouTube, Khan Academy, or a maths app?

Free platforms are great learning tools, but they’re generic. At Algebruh, we teach directly to the curriculum students actually experience in an Australian classroom, and we know what tends to come up in tests, SACs and exams — so preparation is targeted, not guesswork.

What if my child needs more help than expected in a given week?

No issue. We typically agree on goals with your tutor upfront, so we already have a sense of what a student needs week to week. If more support is needed, we’re happy to adjust — for larger cases, we’ll discuss the right solution with you directly.

Will this work for my kid specifically?

Does this follow what they’re learning at school, or something separate?

Either. Tell us what you’d like the student working on each week, or give us a future test or assessment date and we’ll plan the weeks leading up to it for you.

My child doesn’t really know what they need help with — how does that work?

Completely normal. A brief overview of what they’re working on, their level, and the subject is enough for us to take it from there.

What if my child is behind, or ahead, of their year level?

We work at any pace. Goals are set around the student, not their year level — we can start and end wherever makes sense for them.

Do you tutor [X subject]?

Reach out and ask. We’re currently focused on thoroughly covering VCE subjects in Victoria, but there’s a lot of crossover between topics, and we’re happy to work with you on other maths-related subjects too.

What if my child has additional learning needs?

Let us know, and we’ll accommodate as much as we’re able to.

What if my kid doesn’t follow through?

What happens if my child doesn’t submit their work for the week?

We’ll send reminders if work hasn’t been submitted, and try to make contact directly if there’s no response. One quiet week isn’t a problem — things come up. But if there’s a second consecutive week with no response at all despite our attempts to reach you, we’ll pause the subscription rather than continue charging. Nothing is deleted, and tutoring can pick back up whenever you’re ready.

How do I know if they’re actually engaging?

The Google Classroom set up for your student makes it easy to see how things are progressing at a glance.

What’s the actual commitment?

Is there a contract? Can I cancel or pause anytime?

No contract. Cancel any time through your Stripe billing portal, no questions asked. Pausing works the same way — just let us know if you’d rather pause than fully cancel, and we’ll sort it out with you.

What happens if a payment fails?

A failed payment is treated the same as an unpaid week — an active subscription payment is needed for tutoring to continue. We’re not able to offer informal extensions or IOUs on payment.

Can I try a single session first?

We don’t run one-off trial sessions — from week one, your child is treated exactly like every other student, with the full weekly service.

How quickly can we start?

Get in touch and we can typically begin within 1–2 days.

Is this safe and legitimate?

Is my child’s information kept private?

Yes — see our full privacy policy at algebruh.com.au/privacy, and feel free to contact us any time for clarification.

Are the videos and materials shared with other students?

Our core curriculum content is shared across students, but everything beyond that — feedback, custom videos, personal progress — is created purely for your child.

Who do I contact if something’s wrong?

Email support@algebruh.com.au, or your tutor directly — they’ll share their contact details once tutoring begins.

Practical logistics

What platforms do you use?

Google Classroom, Vimeo, Stripe, and Excalidraw.

How fast do tutors respond to questions?

Within 1–2 days. It’s not instant, but between the hours of content already provided and the weekly check-ins, most questions are answered before they’re even asked.

What does a typical week look like?
